Woman conned out of £11,500 by a man pretending to be Chris Hemsworth
I’m going to go out on a limb here, and say if an A-list celebrity messages you and asks you to transfer them money in exchange for a date, it’s probably a scam! However, some people are gullible as fuck. Case in point being this 42-year-old woman, from Irkutsk, Russia, who was conned out of £11,500 after someone contacted her pretending to be Chris Hemsworth. Yup, she though the dude who plays Thor was sending her messages on Twitter!
She told police that she was contacted at a time when her marriage was breaking down, and that she was looking for attention, which ultimately made her more vulnerable to people trying to take advantage. The unnamed woman apparently received a tweet out of the blue, from someone claiming to be the famous actor. She says:
Our marriage was going well until recently when we had several serious arguments. Our relations went quite sour, and just then the actor sent me a message on Twitter.
Here’s what the Twitter message said:
Hey, I am Chris Hemsworth, I am a famous actor from Australia, I live in California. You are so pretty, can we chat?
Wow. Real personal message. Not spammy at all! The woman goes on to say:
I am not a fan, but he is still a very attractive man. I checked him online and saw that he was married and had three children. I thought, what if he was in the same situation as I was, that on the face of it we were both married and at the same time very lonely.
She started messaging him, which after two months, led to ‘Hemsworth’ asking to meet her in Australia, but later saying he was coming to Russia. It was then he began hitting her up for money. Here’s what the police said:
The woman said that she was separately contacted by the actor’s lawyer, who told her that ‘Chris’ was going through temporary financial difficulties. He needed money to pay for a visa, insurance and parking for his private jet in Siberia. The lawyer asked her to transfer money and sent her Chris’s driving license as a guarantee of a payback.
Stupidly, the woman believed the ridiculous story and took out a loan for 1 million roubles, which roughly equates to £11,500. You can probably guess what happened next - she transferred the money and surprise surprise, the social media accounts were deleted. Police are now investigating the matter and urge others not to make the same mistake. So if Hugh Jackman hits you up on Facebook Messenger asking for £5,000 so he can fly over and meet you for coffee in Stoke, say no!
