Judy & Punch trailer: Mia Wasikowska stars in reimagining of puppet story
I’m not really into period movies but this upcoming film from writer & director, Mirrah Foulkes, looks pretty amazing. Judy & Punch is a revenge-themed movie based on the infamous puppet show Punch and Judy. I remember being a kid watching a Punch & Judy show at a local fair and my mum telling me after that Punch was a ‘wife batterer.’ It’s pretty fucked up that this sort of shit was considered kids entertainment.
The film stars Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska and Damon Herriman, who played Charles Manson in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The film is set in the town of Seaside, which is nowhere near the sea, where villagers flock to Punch and Judy’s marionette theatre. Though Punch sees himself as the greatest puppeteer ever, it’s actually Judy who injects all the creativity into the show. However, life imitates art behind closed doors and one night a drunken hot-tempered Punch beats Judy to a pulp and leaves her for dead in the woods. Taken in by a kind stranger, Judy begins to plot her revenge. That’s the way to do it!” Check out the trailer:
How freakin’ captivating does that look?! Judy & Punch received rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year so it’s definitely one to look out for. It’s due to hit cinemas on November 15th.
